Golden Globes 2026 Highlights: One Battle After Another Dominates the Night

The 2026 Golden Globes have made it official: One Battle After Another is the film to beat this awards season. The show was ably hosted once again by Nikki Glaser, returning to the Globes after drawing rave reviews for her first hosting stint in 2025. Sunday’s event showered Paul Thomas Anderson’s muscular dramedy with the prizes for best drama picture, director, screenplay, and supporting actress, which went to Teyana Taylor. But Anderson’s star, Leonardo DiCaprio, was beaten in the comedy-lead-actor category by Timothée Chalamet, who won the prize for his kinetic work in Marty Supreme. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, meanwhile, had to content itself with the prize for cinematic and box office achievement; best drama went instead to Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, an outcome that seemed to surprise even Zhao.

Follow below to see on-the-ground photos and commentary from Rebecca Ford, John Ross, and Wengel Gemu, as well as analysis and commentary from the rest of the Vanity Fair team. We weighed in on the best looks from the red carpet, the night’s most shocking wins and losses, and all the other juicy tidbits that you couldn’t see just on TV.

A Full Circle Moment In GapStudio for Claire Danes

Working the award show circuit has become a little less exotic for multi-decade vet Claire Danes than it once was, but getting ready is no less special for the Globes nominee. For one thing, she uses it as a chance to catch up with some of the dearest people in her life, bringing in the same artists who did her hair and makeup for her wedding to prep her for the show. This year, she even wore a dress by Zac Posen—whom she's known since they were teens.

“He is so brilliant and so warm and imaginative and optimistic, everything seems possible when you're talking to Zac,” she says, “and then he turns it into a reality.”

“It's really such a privilege to be in these longer conversations with designers and admire them and know them. We have a real intimacy,” she says. Of course, fittings with dear friends have more perks than just fashion: “It's also an excuse to gossip.”

Read more about Danes' look and prep, including a rumination on baby teeth, below.

Toto, I Don't Think We're In the Cottage Anymore

There was a time before Heated Rivalry, though it's hard to remember. Stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams were everywhere you looked at the Globes, despite the show not being eligible for awards.

Hamnet Reaches New Heights

Although One Battle retains its firm frontrunner status at the Oscars, Hamnet pulled off an upset over Sinners, which was Vanity Fair’s pick to claim best drama. (Can’t win the entire office pool, right?)

Here is what this upset means for the next phase of awards season—plus the Paul Mescal quote that filmmaker Chloé Zhao shared with Globes audience:

Paul Thomas Anderson's magnum opus, One Battle After Another, continued its winning streak Sunday night, picking up four trophies at the Golden Globes and cementing its status as the front runner in the Oscar race. Here's how OBBA fared on Golden Globes night:

There were a lot of viral moments at this year’s Golden Globes Awards. Nikki Glaser taking shots at CBS. The Heated Rivalry boys making heated jokes on stage. Timothee Chalamet thanking his partner, Kylie Jenner, while accepting an award for Marty Supreme. Oh, and the Nobu sushi.

One last style note…

Can we all agree that Julia Roberts looks fantastic? I received lots of texts about her strawberry necklace—plus matching ring and earrings. For those who were also wondering, the set is custom made for her by Swarovski, and paired with an Armani dress!

Chloé Zhao Told VF That She Wants Another Oscar

One of the most frank moments in Chloé Zhao's incredibly revealing interview with Michelle Ruiz, for this year's Hollywood issue, was when she said she would love another Oscar.

“I don't believe anyone,” she told Ruiz, “when they say they don't want it.”

It's feeling more & more likely…

The room is emptying out at the Beverly Wilshire—but Chloé Zhao gave a good speech that could boost her chances the rest of this season.

Though the world is volatile right now, stars at the Globes did not give many politically-tinged speeches. I’ve rounded up the night’s most overt statements, which were few and far between.

Nikki Glaser’s ending quip, saying that the show “went to 11,” is obviously a reference to its length. But I hope it was also intended as a subtle nod to the late Spinal Tap director Rob Reiner, who otherwise went unmentioned tonight.

Chloé Zhao gave a shoutout to Ryan Coogler in her speech, just as Timothée Chalamet acknowledged Michael B. Jordan after beating him at the Critics Choice Awards. Moments like this indicate that even winners think Sinners deserves more recognition than it’s getting.

Yes, Steven Spielberg produced Hamnet! And here he is, single-handedly propelling Chloé Zhao’s campaign to be the first woman to ever win two Oscars for best director.

We knew One Battle would win best musical or comedy; we didn’t have as firm an idea who would walk away with best drama. Now we know: the Golden Globes have awarded Hamnet, an upset that even director Chloé Zhao evidently wasn’t expecting.

George Clooney comes out to present best drama, and is joined by Don Cheadle. Is the entire Ocean’s 11 crew coming? Where’s Brad Pitt eating a sandwich when you need him?

A bit of a foregone conclusion, but here you go: the best musical or comedy at the Golden Globes is, officially, One Battle After Another. This is the film’s fourth award of the night, three of which went to writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson.
